Firefox Proxy Settings: HTTP, SOCKS5, Auth and Testing
Firefox offers its own connection settings for direct access, system proxy settings, manual proxies and a PAC URL. Select one mechanism, configure the supplied host and port, then verify the route inside Firefox. These settings describe Firefox’s traffic rather than all applications on the computer.
Find the connection settings for your version
Open Firefox Settings and search for proxy or connection settings. The menu location can vary by version; use Mozilla’s current connection-settings instructions if your screen differs. Choose manual configuration only when you have the endpoint details; choose system settings or a PAC URL when that is the intended managed mechanism.
Configure the supplied protocol
For an HTTP proxy, enter the host and port in the HTTP field and use the HTTPS-sharing option only when the endpoint supports that use. For SOCKS, configure the SOCKS host, port and version supported by the client and server. Do not paste a credential-bearing URL into a hostname-only field. Check DNS behavior separately when it matters.
Handle authentication without exposing credentials
Use the proxy’s requested authentication method and verify that Firefox or the selected extension supports it. A 407 response is a proxy authentication problem; a website login is a different layer. Review username/password and IP allowlisting rather than changing both authentication and protocol at once.
Inspect extensions, bypasses and DNS
Firefox can show extensions that control connection settings. Identify the active controller and review the No Proxy For list: matching hosts connect without that proxy. A browser exit-IP check does not establish the DNS resolver or WebRTC behavior. Follow the separate leak tests for those questions.
Verify and undo the change
Check the public exit in Firefox, then load one permitted destination using the same profile. Record the selected mode and result. If it fails, compare a controlled direct request and use the browser troubleshooting flow. Restore the intended direct or managed setting when the temporary test ends; do not leave an obsolete endpoint in the profile.
