How a Proxy Server Works: Requests, CONNECT and Exit IPs
A proxy server receives a connection from a configured client and makes a connection toward the destination on that client’s behalf. The response returns through the intermediary. For that proxied connection, the destination normally sees the proxy’s exit address rather than the client’s direct network address.
Follow one request through the route
First, the browser or script selects a proxy host and port. It connects and provides authentication when required. The proxy forwards an HTTP request or establishes the requested relay, and the destination responds. A failure at any step can produce a different symptom. Keep the endpoint connection, proxy authentication and destination response distinct.
What changes for an HTTPS website
An HTTP proxy commonly uses CONNECT to create a TCP tunnel to an HTTPS destination. TLS then protects the website connection through the tunnel when validation succeeds. The proxy setting and destination URL have separate schemes: an HTTPS destination does not automatically require an HTTPS proxy URL. See HTTP and HTTPS proxy behavior for that distinction.
Forward proxy and reverse proxy face different directions
A forward proxy is selected for client traffic. A reverse proxy receives requests on behalf of a website or application and directs them toward its backends. Buying a browser proxy does not configure a reverse proxy for your server. The forward versus reverse proxy guide covers deployment examples.
What a changed exit IP does not prove
The proxy does not automatically change account identity, cookies, browser coordinates or every DNS query. Apps that ignore the proxy setting may still connect directly. The route can also have separate client-to-proxy and proxy-to-destination IP families. Describe the particular connection you tested rather than saying the whole device is anonymous.
Verify the route in the real client
Check the public exit inside the browser or worker that will use the endpoint, then make one permitted request to the intended destination. Record status and timing. If authentication fails, use the authentication checklist; for other failures, follow the layered error guide. This establishes a useful baseline before adding volume.
Frequently asked questions
Does every application follow a system proxy?
No. Each application can support, ignore or override that setting.
Does a proxy change my GPS position?
No. Browser and device location services are separate from the public network exit.
Why can the IP check work while my destination fails?
They are separate requests to different destinations and can have different compatibility or policy outcomes.
